Why Choose Uganda for Gorilla Trekking?

Close-up of a dominant silverback mountain gorilla sitting in the dense foliage of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, symbolizing the park’s iconic primate conservation.

Uganda is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, living deep in the misty jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

It’s not just about the gorillas — it’s about the journey: the heartbeat of the forest, the thrill of the hike, the emotion of locking eyes with a 400-pound silverback.

Gorilla Trekking Rules & What to Expect

To protect the endangered mountain gorillas and ensure a safe, respectful encounter, Uganda has strict trekking guidelines.

Before you head into the forest, you’ll attend a detailed briefing from park rangers.

Key rules include:

  • Visitors must be 15 years or older

  • Maintain a 7-meter distance from the gorillas

  • No flash photography

  • If you’re ill, you won’t be allowed to trek

  • You get 1 hour with the gorillas once found

The trek itself can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location. Expect mud, steep trails, and dense foliage — but the reward is beyond anything words can describe.
